PINEY FALLS – Grandview, Tennessee

When I was about halfway down the slope, I was able to pause and get stable footing to get this first clear full view of the falls. The Upper Piney Falls are about 80 feet high.

A fun feature of the Upper Piney Falls is that, once the trail gets to the bottom, it reverses itself and heads back around plunge basin and behind the falls. So in a brief period you have traveled both over and under the falls!

Once I got to the bottom, I was able to get all the way around in front of the falls, and even make my way around past them a little, to the point where the water in the plunge pool empties once again into the creek channel to continue downstream. This is the view from there looking back at the falls.

I had been to the falls a few times before bringing my camera along to take these shots. I hiked the trail this day, after a very rainy Spring, because I knew I would see more water than at any other time of the year. The waterfall didn’t disappoint, and there is a really nice bridal-veil cascade at its base.

Here’s the view as I made my way along the trail leading back toward the falls. The water in the plunge pool empties into the creek channel where you see the light rocks in the center of the photo. The creek then flows on down to the Lower Piney Falls.

View looking out from behind the falls.
